Heartbreak was always the sound of the door, slamming with the heat of your defiance; last words left haphazardly on the floor, scattered at my feet like crushed suppliants. It was the long deep fissures racing, swift, across my face with each spasm of pain, and the stabbing beat of my heart adrift somewhere, alone in its punctured refrain. It was the trembling steps to reconstruct and break apart and push back together limbs, organs, and senses until tethered delicately; confounded and doom-struck. The new body found heartbreak was release And set about rebuilding, piece by piece.

We are the shattered discards of old stars, Or the silky innards of white spilled moons. We are not perfect, but are criss-crossed scars Dissecting every moment in this room. I was the pause before you spoke the words, Eddying towards escape and release. I was the dark side of your face unstirred, Turned inside to break each infinite piece. We are not glass, but sand on skin, grinding Slowly but constantly over old wounds. You were the sun brought low, yet still blinding, To cover up our shadows and surround. I was the precipice, waiting to fall- Just a punctured whisper caught in your thrall.

They died today, all twelve with drooping heads, Trickling hearts dripped down into their stems. I ached because it was my life they bled- My broken heart gazing across at them. I wished I’d saved them radiant and fresh- Open, reaching, greedy for each long day. Instead I found them thin with blackened flesh- Silent, sad; longing tendrilled to decay. My fingers cringed to touch their paper heads, Each slivered piece, a soul to fall away. If only now they wouldn’t be so red, In death the colour should be tinged with grey. My beating heart fell still, slipped next to you- For what was I except a dead thing too?

Perhaps, for a moment, I reached for you, lost time tangled in our lucent shadows; fingers tripping blindly over aches to grasp at something in the darkness aglow. There was an age spent on this precipice, watching the tantalising shape of you, just a moment spent on the edge of bliss; just a shadow shaped, there, where you withdrew. Greedily I breathed your faded presence, as if somehow it could rewind our time and place us where your hand was firm in mine. But though I fixed my eyes where you once were and clung devoutly to your pale essence, you were gone and nothing in my heart stirred.

I found my heart between the lines of words, I found emotions tucked in beside letters And this heart-wrenching, gut-squeezing pain Locked heavily underneath their footprints. Perhaps, for an instant, there was a spark: A dull-edged throbbing in the air above, A tremor in the ring around my heart; Perhaps there was a fleeting glow of love. But even as the scene around us passed, Time leapt from burning bridge to burning bridge- And then I watched as you divined our cast: Our future consequence laid out abridged. I held my breath and watched you with still eyes And as I watched you slipped away from me. You gathered up your forecast, flung awry, And with dark eyes you left unhurriedly. There was hot breath and the whisper of clothes; Wrappings, expounded once they reached the floor. Tossed at random, they were silken augurs, Breathing portents from a state of repose. We were prophets, that's what I like to think- We babbled sibylline supplications And hissed in tongues; hearts seeking salvation And a taste of what's left after the brink. Time stopped; ritualistic yet not still- My thoughts raced on finding only omens And dark regrets steeping inside again; Taking, breaking the flavour from the thrill. There was nothing and everything was dark- Perhaps, for an instant, there was a spark.

The Train Home

We're chasing cars from Belfast to Whitehead- I'm pretending to look out at the sea- But secretly I'm watching you instead, You're watching me, but not so secretly. The train is like a dying man's last breaths, I think, then strangely I'm aware of this- Sitting so close and breathing that same breath And I know somehow we will just exist Here; suspended, your fingers catching mine. And all the time I'm aware of the end Drawing closer; that's my stop down the line- In the intervening moments, we blend. I leave the train and find that love has fled, While chasing cars from Belfast to Whitehead.

She was all jagged ribs and jutting hips- Hollows and shadows room enough for me. She was all sharp edges and ragged lips- Kissed by everyone, everyone but me. She was made of space and the lines between Were perches you could set young hearts along. They lodged there beating, waiting, plump and keen- Until they fell and finally belonged. She was a jigsaw made of broken parts- Roughly hewn from scraps of mismatched lovers. She was the little bit left from the heart That struggles to survive undiscovered. But I uncovered her and found my place- Not part of her but held in her embrace.

Would you believe it's been almost a year since my last sonnet? I didn't even notice the time had passed. It's been over 2 years since I wrote in this. I found something incredible the other night. I was lying in bed, thinking, when words came into my head. I was so afraid they'd disappear again that I wrote them into my phone. Ok, so it's probably the crappiest sonnet I've ever written, but it's something, Something that means something (to me). The first rhyming meaningful words in almost a year. I love showers that are scalding hot- so hot that it actually feels like shards of ice on your back. And then I love slush too, bah to snow, it makes a funny noise when you walk on it, slush makes that crispy crunchy noise.... Have just handed in an Antigone essay, and have looked at that wrd so much now that it looks strange to my eyes...I got more sleep than the usual essay writing sleep time permits- I went to bed at 4.40am and got up at 8.45, so I still feel refreshed...ish... I may have a go at some fanfic tonight, instead of writing my essay yesterday afternoon I was writing up a detailed plan, and was nearly late for lit because I w
